Our Choir's History
According to founder members, the Malmesbury Singers began in September 1961 under the direction of Miss Margaret Crallan, formed through the Rural Music School. In September 1964 the choir became a mixed ensemble. Early rehearsals were held at Malmesbury Upper School; today they take place in Malmesbury Abbey.
John Hughes later took over the leadership of the choir for several years. In 1991, Iain Duffin became conductor and musical director, with John Hughes returning a few years later as accompanist. From 2025, Tom Carr has taken on the role of accompanist. John Hughes’ exceptionally long contribution to the choir will be honoured at the Summer Concert on 4 July 2026.
In 2023, Iain Duffin retired after many years as conductor. Thomas Mottershead stepped in to conduct the Summer Concert in June 2023 and the choir’s first concert of the new season in December 2023.
Today the Malmesbury Singers comprise around 60–70 members, drawn from roughly a 25-mile radius of Malmesbury. The choir usually performs at least two concerts each year, occasionally including a lighter summer programme.
Over the years the choir has performed a wide range of works, from original compositions such as Hannah and the Tyger and Eilmer to major choral works including Verdi’s Requiem and Haydn’s Creation. Rehearsals are friendly, enjoyable and rewarding.
New members are always welcome, particularly male voices. A short and informal voice appraisal is usually required — simply bring a brief piece to sing.
